What is the format of a Bitcoin address?

A Bitcoin address is an alphanumeric sequence made up of uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers. A Bitcoin address starts with 1 or 3 and contains up to 34 characters.

In Bitcoin there have been two types of addresses so far:

  1. The standard addresses, for example this one:

1CNPCBhT2mW7zWP9wwZQ6sVV9d9sPhczfP (NEVER USE THIS ADDRESS. IT IS AN EXAMPLE !!)
Technically they are called P2PKH (Pay To Public Key Hash) and they all start with the number

  2. Multi-signature addresses, for example this one:

3AgajiKjLg2oemAHg2jPafUZJQCqZSg1o4 (NEVER USE THIS ADDRESS. IT IS AN EXAMPLE !!)
Technically they are called P2SH (Pay To Script Hash) and they start with number 3

Notice: A Bitcoin address never has spaces, dashes or full stops.

The most common use of P2SH group addresses are multi-signature addresses but it is important to note that this is not their only use. Therefore, all addresses beginning with "3" are P2SH addresses and all multi-signature addresses begin with "3". But it is important to note that not all addresses beginning with "3" are multi-signature addresses.
